Copy and stylistic editing

Copy editing, stylistic and substantive editing, and proofreading for monographs, edited volumes, journal articles, and trade nonfiction, in US or British English and to Chicago or your house style. For multi-author volumes, I bring terminology, citations, and style into line across every chapter.

I have also edited more than 700 manuscripts across 130+ MDPI journals, from the life sciences and engineering to the social sciences, often on 18-hour turnarounds.

Editing for authors writing in English as a second language

Language editing that keeps your argument and voice intact while making the prose read as if it were first written in English. Much of this work is with historians in Spain and Portugal.

Translation

Spanish, Portuguese, and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian into English: books, chapters, articles, primary sources, and research-project materials in history and the humanities, with the period terminology kept precise.

Indexing

Back-of-book indexes for academic monographs and trade nonfiction, prepared in Cindex to the publisher’s specifications and page allowance.

Fact-checking and research

Verification of quotations, names, dates, statistics, and sources; Chicago-style endnote construction; and historical and biographical research for trade authors.

Spanish paleography

Transcription of Spanish manuscripts from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, as written or modernized, with English translation if you need it.

Trained at the Mellon Summer Institute in Spanish Paleography at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin, and in years of archival research on early modern Seville.

About

I trained as a historian of early modern Spain. My doctoral dissertation at the University of Pennsylvania, Lords of the Seven Parishes: Neighbourhood, Guild, and Revolt in Early Modern Seville, 1520–1652, was built on years of work in Spanish archives.

I taught history at St. Francis Xavier University and the University of New Brunswick, with courses on early modern Europe, imperial Spain, and the Mediterranean, and I have been editing and translating for publishers and scholars since 2010. Years in the archive and the classroom taught me to read for the argument as well as the sentence, and to respect the conventions of the fields my authors write in. Having lived in the Balkans, the Middle East, Spain, the UK, and the US, I’m at home moving between languages and cultures.
